Dispute Resolution

The goal of the Kern High School District Special Education Department is to work together with families to ensure students receive the services and supports they need. Most concerns can be addressed through open communication with your student’s teacher, case manager, or school administrator.

If a concern cannot be resolved informally, there are formal processes available to help resolve disagreements, including:

  • IEP Team Meetings – You may request a meeting at any time to review and discuss your student’s Individualized Education Program.

  • Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) – A voluntary, collaborative process that helps families and schools reach agreement without filing a formal complaint.

  • Mediation – A neutral mediator from the California Department of Education (CDE) can assist in reaching a mutually acceptable resolution.

  • Due Process Hearings – A formal legal process for resolving disagreements about a student’s special education program.

  • State Complaints – You may file a complaint with the CDE if you believe a school has violated special education law.
