Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA)

Kern High Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA) ensures students with disabilities receive appropriate support and services. The SELPA communicates directly with the California Department of Education regarding resource allocation and compliance with federal and state special education laws. 

Key Roles and Responsibilities of SELPA
 
Support: Provide guidance and support in implementing the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 and other relevant laws. 

Ensuring Program Availability: Ensure that a full range of special education programs, supports and services are available to all students with disabilities.

Facilitating Interagency Coordination: Coordinate with various public and private agencies to ensure a comprehensive system of support for students with disabilities.
 
Promoting Least Restrictive Environment: Ensure that students with disabilities are educated in the least restrictive environment, alongside their non-disabled peers, to the maximum extent appropriate. 

Providing Professional Development: Provide professional development opportunities for educators and staff on topics such as special education law, Section 504 law, best practices, and evidence-based interventions. 

Overseeing Fiscal Management: Manage the fiscal aspects of special education funding, ensuring proper allocation and reporting of resources.
 
Supporting Compliance: Play a key role in monitoring compliance with special education and Section 504 regulations and providing support in addressing any identified areas of non-compliance. 

Advocating for Students: Advocate for the rights and needs of students with disabilities, working to ensure they receive a high-quality education. 

Facilitating Transition Planning: Support students with disabilities as they transition from high school to post-secondary education or employment.
 
Community Engagement: Engage with parents, families, and community members to foster understanding and support for students with disabilities.
