KHSD Is Dedicated To Safe Schools

School safety cannot be separated from student achievement. Studies show that when students are able to focus their energies on learning rather than safety, academic achievement is enhanced. Safe schools are successful schools. Therefore, the Kern High School District Board of Trustees continues to place the maintenance of safe and secure schools at the highest priority level. By working closely with staff and students, KHSD Police Officers are able to stay abreast of potential hazards and take steps to mitigate them in order to enhance the safety and security of the campus. The Kern High School District strives to maintain a safe learning environment at each campus and our police officers are among several tools used to ensure nothing interferes with the education of your children.

Police with a Purpose

Since its formation in 1975, the Kern High School District Police Department has been committed to maintaining schools that are safe havens for students. The department is dedicated to protecting students, staff members and district property. The officers have developed close working relationships with students, staff members, the community and local law enforcement agencies to help maintain safe and peaceful schools where students can learn and grow.

School Safety Team

The School Police Officers are part of a network of professionals who are trained to help students deal with the pressures of being a teenager. Each comprehensive high school has a security team that includes a Dean of Students, a Police Officer and Campus Security Personnel to ensure the safety of students and staff. The dedicated security staff work with highly trained professionals on each campus to include Counselors, Teachers, Community Counselors, Probation Officers, School Administrators and other school personnel to help students succeed.

Prevention & Intervention

The Kern High School Police Department is successful not just because its officers are responsive and alert, but because of a strong belief in providing students with alternatives and assistance. Various programs along with counseling and mentoring offer students alternative activities. Athletic teams, band, speech, student academies, clubs and a myriad of other co-and extra-curricular programs keep students involved in positive, organized events that enrich their character. Students in need of assistance receive help from Counselors, Community Counselors, Probation Officers and other staff. Prevention and Intervention are key components to keeping schools safe.

School Safety Involves All of Us

School Districts cannot maintain safe campuses without the involvement of parents, family and the community. The problems that confront our schools are merely a reflection of society as a whole. We are all responsible for developing solutions and helping our youth stay on the right track. Students, teachers and staff members at the Kern High School District have consistently reported feeling safe on our campuses through numerous surveys. Keeping the areas surrounding our campuses safe is also a priority of the KHSD Police Department and is achieved through partnerships with businesses, allied law enforcement agencies and concerned community members. The Kern High School District Police Department and its officers are committed to work with our partners to enhance the safety, security and quality of life for the students, staff and the community we serve. Join us in this endeavor to ensure school safety!
