Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage was celebrated beginning in 1978 and was expanded into a month-long event in 1992. California is one of the states with the largest Asian American and Pacific Islanders populations. Understanding Asian and Pacific Islander history is an integral part of celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
