State Recognition for KHSD Continuation Schools

Two Kern High School District Continuation High Schools were named Model Continuation High Schools for 2018 by State Schools Chief Tom Torlakson. Torlakson included Nueva Continuation High School and Vista West Continuation High School in the distinguished list, when he made the announcement February 12, 2018. The sites are two of only 32 continuation schools statewide to receive this special recognition this year.

“These model continuation high schools provide a space where students can feel a sense of accomplishment and increased confidence and receive strong educational support. Creating an academically challenging yet encouraging school climate can help turn an at-risk student on the verge of dropping out into a high school graduate prepared for a future of career or college.” - Tom Torlakson, State Superintendent of Public Instruction

According to the California Department of Education, our continuation schools were recognized for creating innovative programs that focus on academics and social-emotional learning. They are also credited with helping students who have faced many challenges get back on their path to realizing their full academic potential.Schools were selected based on a comprehensive and competitive application process the included peer review and a site visit.

Mark Weir, the site Administrator at Nueva, works with his staff to create a trusting and nurturing environment where diversity is celebrated. The Nueva staff shows up to school each day with a common vision to empower students to create opportunities for themselves.

“Nueva offers students the opportunity to learn, grow, succeed, and to celebrate their achievements. The Model school recognition allows the staff to know that what they do is important and that their hard work and dedication matters for our students and our community. Nueva is honored to be recognized as a model continuation high school.”- Mark Weir, Site Administrator, Nueva Continuation High School

Site Administrator at Vista West Continuation High School, Mike Mullings, works with his staff to provide a meaningful educational experience for all students.   The Vista West Gators follow the Gator RULE (Respect, Understanding, Leadership and Effort).

“Vista West is extremely honored to be recognized by the California Department of Education (CDE) as a Model Continuation High School. We appreciate the opportunity to celebrate with our entire community the tremendous success at Vista West.” - Mike Mullings, Site Administrator, Vista West Continuation High School
