Bakersfield Adult School: Empowering Adult Learners

At Bakersfield Adult School (BAS), the message to adult students is clear: "We got you." For many adults, transitioning back to education can seem daunting. But, those three words capture the unwavering commitment of the teachers and staff at BAS, assuring students that they are not alone on their journey to pursuing their goals.

For over a century, Bakersfield Adult School (BAS) has been enriching the lives of adult students, providing them with opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Established in 1917, BAS classes were offered in the basement of  Kern Union High School, now known as Bakersfield High School. Initially, the school only offered language skills and citizenship classes to the residents of Kern County. But, over the years, BAS has expanded its offerings, now serving as one of the oldest and largest adult schools in California.

Since moving to its current location on S. Mt Vernon Avenue in 1985, the school has evolved into a comprehensive institution catering to the diverse needs of its adult learners. The programs offered include English as a Second Language, High School Diploma, Adult Basic Education, GED preparation and testing, Career & Technical Education (CTE), Older Adult Education, Adults with Disabilities, Adults in Corrections, and Citizenship. Most courses are free, while some do require a minimal materials fee. Also housed on site, is a state-funded Children’s Center supporting both day and evening families.

With more than 10,000 students annually, a majority of classes are offered at six extension sites throughout the Bakersfield community: Mt Vernon, “F” Street- Health Careers, The Job Spot, Recycling Lives, and Lerdo Correctional Facility. An additional 25-plus sites operate under the Bakersfield Adult School, most notably the Café 1600 culinary program located at America’s Job Center of California at 1600 East Belle Terrace. The “F” Street location in downtown Bakersfield offers CTE programs in medical training and Career Resources. The Job Spot was designed to serve communities of socioeconomic need as a “one-stop shop” for educational and employment resources.

In 2023, BAS achieved several milestones, including 214 adults receiving their high school diploma, and 46 adults earning their GED. Additionally, 707 adults at BAS and Lerdo Detention Facility completed one or more Career Technical Education programs, while 12 adults graduated from the two-year vocational nurse program in 2023.

In recognition of Adult Education Week (April 8-12), we take pride in BAS's commitment to serving the community by breaking down barriers and empowering adult students to achieve their educational and career goals.
