KHSD’s Nursing Services are responsible for strengthening and facilitating the education process by improving and protecting the health status of children by identifying and assisting in the removal or modification of health related barriers to learning and teaching process for individual students.

Our School Nurses are especially prepared and uniquely qualified in preventive health, health assessment, and referral procedures. School nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well being academic success and life long achievement of students. The ability to learn at school is directly related to the status of a student’s health. Identification of health barriers is crucial to the provision of an appropriate education plan for every student.

School Nursing Responsibilities and Services

School nurses are the link between health care and education;
  • Providing health care as the district’s only credentialed, licensed, qualified health professional: to students, staff and parents
  • Providing education on health, nutrition, special health care needs, assessing health care needs.
  • Interpreting medical orders, medical reports and terminology
  • Being a liaison with staff, students, parents, medical community, community health agencies, hospitals
  • Providing problem solving techniques for complex medical, ethical, issues safe medication administration by students with ADHD, diabetes, asthma, epilepsy
  • Providing health and developmental assessments, vision screening, hearing screening and tympanometry
  • Providing communicable disease control including immunization referrals and follow up for students
