Adult Education

Bakersfield Adult School is the largest provider of adult education programs in the Southern San Joaquin Valley and one of the largest adult schools in the entire state of California. We currently serve approximately 12,000 adult learners in the greater Bakersfield area annually. “The Mission of Bakersfield Adult School is to enrich the lives of our students by providing opportunities for achieving personal and professional success.” Adults who are ready to open the door to their future come to Bakersfield Adult School (BAS). Whether to learn English, history and the culture of the United States, strengthen their employability skills, or complete a high school diploma BAS can help adult students get started. BAS features innovative on-line learning programs with tablet technology to help increase “digital literacy” for an ever changing technological world. BAS is a well-respected institution within the community. Building and maintaining strong community partnerships is essential in developing meaningful programs for a diverse student population.

Bakersfield Adult School first opened its doors in 1917 in the basement of Kern Union High School (which we know today as Bakersfield High School). The current BAS Mount Vernon facility was built in 1985; since then well over 500,000 adult students have “walked through our doors” into their future.

The main BAS campus is located at 501 S. Mt Vernon Avenue in southeast Bakersfield. With easy access off of Highway 58 it is an ideal location for residents throughout the community. The main campus encompasses 49 acres and is immediately adjacent to the Regional Occupational Center, Adult Based Life Experience (ABLE), Tierra Del Sol Continuation High School and the Discovery Learning Center (Independent Studies).
