AKA Student Recognition Luncheon

Students in the 10th and 11 grades throughout the Kern High School District (KHSD) were celebrated for their academic achievements during the annual Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Recognition Luncheon.

Students were treated to a special afternoon at Hodel’s Country Dining on November 15, 2023, for their hard work and successes in the classroom. KHSD Superintendent Dr. Bryon Schaefer welcomed students and guests and provided opening comments. Harriet Edwards, AKA President, Chris Dutton, KHSD Project BEST Coordinator, and Kesha Owens, KHSD and YWEL Advisor, delivered program comments and project overview.

Keynote Speaker Andrew “Dance Fever 3D” Jones shared his story of being born a drug-addicted preemie and facing challenges growing up to overcoming obstacles to find his power of purpose. Jones is a Student Behavior and Supports Specialist in the Kern High School District and a self-taught fitness educator and artist in all dance styles.

The afternoon concluded with an awards celebration, including recognition of the top junior scholars who had achieved a 4.0 grade point average or above.
