The Kern High School District and Project BEST partnered with California State University, Bakersfield for the inaugural B.E.S.T Men Teach- Black Excellence in Scholarship and Teaching event on January 16, 2020. Around 300 high school students spent the day at CSUB listening and learning from local educators about their path to the classroom. Organizers said the goal of the event is to inspire young African American males to pursue a career in education. Gayle Batey, a longtime supporter of Education in Kern County, and her husband, originally funded Project BEST in 1992 to increase graduation and college attendance rates of African American male students in the Kern High School District.

thank you Leah I appreciate you Kristin spent his high school years Walking The Halls at South High School today he walks purpose of Tierra Del Sol high school friends were all you do is a site administrator and the director of project best which stands for black excellence in scholarship in teaching I love what I get to do here I'm honored that different High School District you know supporting me throughout my 20-plus years in education my father at 17 while his class going off to college he faced adult responsibilities at a young age Dutton says it was his mom and teachers who inspired him to make a difference in students lives I can look back in on my on my I'm here because of the Educators that I that I was involved with if I can do it they can do it. At the end of the day that's the message is ring loud and clear recently at the Kern High School District in Project best partner with Cal State Bakersfield and other Community Partners for the best mint each event held at CSUB today's event is really about focusing on putting the TV back in best best dance for black excellence in scholarship and teaching and so what we aim to do is you know like I said get our young man to take the A through Z curriculum and get into college and I hope is that they become teachers and come back to the community or whichever Community choose and and and get into the classroom and You Know Each one teach one you know Inspire that next generation of African-American male teacher they included various workshops led by African American male Educators from our community school information and a whole lot of inspiration at one point in time we were all students and I'm for some of us a little longer for some of us just the other day but I say that prophecy Miss if I can find somebody on campus if I can be that impact on campus for be able to really come and reach out to me then I've done my job to be able to encourage them and give them hope so and it'd be pretty nice for Dutton 1LE he helped students walk away with is one that he says we'll get them the farthest in life that's what we need out of a teacher and regardless of their ethnicity
