What is Kern Learn?

The Kern High School District is pleased to announce an educational option available to all of its students.  In an effort to incorporate innovative and creative ways to serve students in its attendance area, we have created a new program called Kern Learn.

Kern Learn is a blended learning model that combines online learning and face-to-face education. Kern Learn utilizes an internet-based learning management system as a digital classroom environment to teach courses for KHSD credit. Kern Learn offers increased access to standards-based courses taught by highly qualified staff. The use of digital curriculum enables flexible scheduling options for students. Students may take Kern Learn courses to supplement their traditional schedule, or may enroll as a full-time online student.

Characteristics of the Kern Learn Program:
  • Classes are offered to all 9-12 grade students in the Kern High School District attendance boundaries
  • Virtual/Online education
  • Flexible hours
  • Rigorous, standards-based instruction
  • Highly Qualified teachers
  • UC/CSU approved (“a-g”) college preparatory courses
  • California Interscholastic Foundation (CIF) athletic eligibility at school of residency
  • Kern High School District facility access
The Kern Learn Program provides blended learning strategies including video screen casting, online discussion boards, filtered world-wide access, and many others. The Kern Learn program will allow students to complete course work online and communicate regularly with their instructor and classmates in a controlled educational environment.

Full-time Kern Learn students must take a minimum of 4 classes through the online program, and can enroll in up to 3 courses at their school of residence. To earn a KHSD diploma, all requirements set forth by the California Department of Education and the KHSD Board of Trustees must be met. All extracurricular activities such as sports, band, dances, and graduation ceremony will be accessible through the Kern Learn student’s school of residence. The KHSD school of residence is based on board approved boundary maps and can be accessed through the KHSD website.
