Transition Fair
 
On Thursday, April 25, 2024, the Kern High School District Special Education Department will be hosting a Transition Fair from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Kern Agricultural Pavilion located at 3300 East Belle Terrace, Bakersfield, CA 93307. The Transition Fair is an opportunity for students, parents/guardians, school staff and community members to be made aware of agencies that are available in Kern County. The agencies participating in the Transition Fair will benefit students with mild/moderate and moderate/severe disabilities. Attached are the flyers Transition Fair flyers in English/Spanish. Special Education Department Information

 

As a single district Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA), the Kern High School District is responsible for ensuring high quality special education programs and services at our 19 comprehensive high schools and numerous special education centers to promote the educational success of students with disabilities. We are committed to excellence and believe that all students can learn and become responsible members of our community.

We are excited with the services and programs that are available to our students, parents/guardians, teachers, support staff and the community.

 

Surrogate Parent: Our department is looking for community members who would be interested in serving as a Surrogate Parent. A Surrogate Parent is a person who is appointed to act in the best interest of a student with a disability when that student's parent/guardian is unable to make educational decisions. The Surrogate Parent is a part of the student's Individualized Education Plan (IEP)Team and works with the school to plan the student's Special Education services. Community Advisory Committee (CAC): During the 2023-2024 school year, the committee will hold multiple meetings. The Community Advisory Committee answers questions and addresses concerns related to the needs of our students. Click here to visit the Community Advisory web page. 

 

Teacher Trainings: Special Education teachers are provided with instruction/trainings related to Special Education and the Kern High School District. Topics include case management, writing IEPs, understanding assessments and their relationship to student needs, developing transition plans that will best serve our student population and behavior intervention plans.

 

Professional Assault Crisis Training (ProACT): Throughout the year, Special Education certificated and classified staff participate in Pro-ACT Training. The purpose of the training is to help staff critically assess a crisis situation and determine the safest response.

 

CAPTAIN: CAPTAIN is a multi-agency network developed to support the understanding and use of Evidence Based Practices for individuals affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder across the state. The KHSD CAPTAIN Leadership Team will be providing staff development opportunities to teachers and support staff throughout the year. For additional information on CAPTAIN click here.
