Our goals for success are to understand that feeding our students is our main priority as well as communicating in a professional manner. Kern High School District Nutrition Services Department is dedicated to providing our students with a well-balanced and good-tasting meal that meets all the nutrition guidelines to ensure that students have overall good health and well-being.

Thanks to the California Universal Meal Program all students enrolled in the Kern High School District will receive one free breakfast and one free lunch per school day regardless of income. All students must take a minimum of three components with one of the components being a fruit or vegetable.

The Nutrition team provides meals under the National School Breakfast and Lunch programs as well as after school snacks and supper meals under the Child and Adult Care Food Program. Each day we happily serve more than 9,000 breakfasts and 20,000 lunches so our students can achieve academic success. Our team looks forward to serving our students a variety of fresh and minimally processed foods.

Good nutrition is essential for learning in school. Continuing healthy eating habits is also important during the long hot summer months. Eating nutritious foods helps ensure students retain their hard learned knowledge… and to help them to keep right on learning throughout the summer. For many of these children, summer vacation can bring the temptation of eating empty calorie snacks and foods that are high in sugar, fats and sodium. And for many others, summer exposes students to an increased risk of hunger and developmental decline. Make seasonal fruits and vegetables a high priority for your snacks, meals and anytime.

Summertime is a time to enjoy...but it is also a time to remember to eat right. Make sure good nutrition remains a priority all summer long, and students will return to school in the Fall healthy, sharp and ready to learn.

Farm-to-School for Fresh Fruits & Vegetables  Farm to School

Across the country, an increasing number of schools and districts have begun to source more foods locally and to provide complementary educational activities to students that emphasize food, farming, and nutrition. This nationwide movement is designed to enrich children’s bodies and minds while supporting local economies is often referred to as “farm to school.”

The objectives of Nutrition Services Department is to serve healthy meals in school cafeterias and improve student nutrition, while providing agriculture, health and nutrition education opportunities...and we want to support our local and regional farmers.

The key is to make these fresh options available and to get kids to try new things. Farm to School programs link school students and farmers in a way that improves foods offered in schools, educates kids about healthy eating and local foods, and creates income opportunities for farmers supplying to schools.

A Farm-to-School Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program can be an important catalyst for change in our efforts to combat childhood obesity by helping children learn more healthful eating habits. It has also been proven to be a successful way to introduce kids and teens to a variety of produce that they otherwise might not have the opportunity to sample.
