Program Description

This Graphic Arts course is designed to teach students the basic artistic principles of balance, contrast, unity, rhythm, emphasis, variety, negative space, and metamorphosis, etc... Students use hand drawing, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, In-Design and Image Ready to solve design problems and create original artistic compositions to prove their artistic competence.  Basic instruction of hand animation will be included. 

Students work is compiled in a web based digital portfolio which is also used as an assessment vehicle for articulation with Bakersfield College, application to art schools and employment seeking.  The course is designed to give the students entry-level skills in the graphic arts field.  Students will have the opportunity to work as an intern for a local business during the second semester. 


Students are required to complete a unit on career development and learn specific information about the graphic arts industry.  They will develop a resume/ cover letter and learn interviewing techniques.  They will also take an interest inventory and research careers they are shown to have an aptitude for.  Students will be well informed of different educational options after high school.  Presentations will be given by industry professionals and post-secondary educational possibilities will be explored.  


During the second semester of the course students will learn to apply their design skills to output by creating a wide variety of projects.  Students will use screen printing, traditional and digital photography, printers, plotters, vinyl cutters and other lab equipment like adhesion, lamination and binding machines to realize their designs. Students will exit class with a firm understanding of how output influences the design process.

Enrollment Info

All incoming high school juniors, seniors, and persons 16 years of age and older are eligible to enroll in ROC programs. Most programs are accessible for individuals with disabilities. Enrollment priority is given to high school juniors and seniors.

High School Student Enrollment - Students must be 16 years of age and must enroll through their high school counselor. All courses earn high school graduation credit.

Adult Enrollment - Adults interested in classes should call the Regional Occupational Center for an appointment to speak with a counselor. Classes not filled to capacity by juniors and seniors are open to adults. Counselors will refer to waiting lists and will contact interested adults when openings occur. Adults are accepted into classes on a first-come basis. Adults need to be present and on time to their first class as the classes fill rapidly.
