Mission Statement of Nueva H.S.

Nueva High School fosters an environment that promotes students educational, vocational and personal success.  Staff, parents, and community resources are utilized to encourage students' academic achievement, self-worth, and independence.  We strive to empower students to enter the work force or pursue postsecondary education and to be responsible and productive members of society.

Welcome to Nueva High School

At this moment, many thought may be going through your mind.  You may be relieved to be here at Nueva, you may be angry about being here, or you may be just plain scared.  Yet, what really should be forming in your mind is a measure of excitement.  You are about to be given a fresh start – a new chance.  For one reason or another, you may have been unable to “make it” at your other high school.  We hope you will make your experience a good one.  The entire staff is here to help.  What we ask of you is:

a)      Obey a few rules

b)      Treat the staff, fellow students, and yourself with respect

c)      TRY to LEARN!

ATTENDANCE:  Being at school is very important.  The amount of credit you earn and the quality of your grade will depend on your attendance.  There is so much to learn and so little time to learn it all in.  You are asked to give us six hours a day, five days a week for only 180 days.  That means you have nearly 18 hours each school day to watch T.V., listen to music, eat, sleep, go to the doctor, or even visit with your friends.  A year has 8,766 hours in it; we want you to give us only 1000 of them for your education.

Because attendance is so important, teachers check each period to make sure which students are present.  Every day, phone calls are made to the homes of all students who are absent.

It should be noted that any student who is absent for three days in a row from school could be asked to bring a note from a doctor explaining their illness.  Further, continued unexplained absences often result in a student being referred to a caseworker and/or contact being made to a probation officer, and/or to the Kern High School District SARB.

Failure to attend classes for the required amount of time may cause students to have legal action taken against them and their parents.  Students who need to leave campus after they have arrived at school must have permission from the principal and they must sign out in the office before leaving school.

All students are expected to be in school each day except for cases of emergency or for the following reasons (ED. Code 46010).

1.      Personal illness-This may require a doctor’s note.

2.      Quarantine-Directed by a county or city health officials.

3.      Medical, dental, optometry, or chiropractic services rendered

4.      Jury Duty

5.      Exclusion due to incomplete immunization records

6.     Death of an immediate member of your family

TARDINESS: Students arriving tardy anytime after the second bell has rung must report to the office and sign in.

  • 3rd tardy student will receive a punishment (extra assignment, after schoolwork in that teachers room etc…
  • 4th tardy student will have a conference with Ms. Colbert; she will contact parent or legal guardian.
  • 5th tardy student will have a conference with Mr. B and contact with the parent or legal guardian.
  • 6th tardy student will have a conference with Mr. B and will be suspended pending a parent conference.

What to do When You are Absent

When you are absent, have your parent/guardian phone the school (845-1532) and inform the office of your absent.  A recording service is always available 24 hours a day.  The parent/guardian may leave the message in Spanish.

Have parents/guardian write a note giving the student's name, date of absence, reason for absents, their name, and the date.

Students 18 and older may clear their own absences with both parent and school permission.

1. ATTITUDE: Good behavior and proper language should be every student's goal.  However, just as important is the willingness, and a desire to learn.  The entire staff at Nueva expects students to learn.

2. WITHDRAWAL FROM SCHOOL: Anyone seeking to withdraw from school, whether to move or go to work must inform the principle.

3. BUS RULES: Any student riding the bus must obey the following rules of the Kern High School District.

            B. Refrain from loud conversation and profanity.

C. No singing or boisterous conduct allowed.

D. Keep all parts of the body inside the bus

E. Obey the bus driver at all times

F. No eating on the bus.

These rules have been designed to protect the safety of all bus riders.  If a student's conduct is unsatisfactory, action can be taken to deny the privilege of riding the bus.

4. BUS STOPS: students will be informed of these locations and the bus schedule by the principal.  ALL SCHOOL RULES APPLY AT THE BUS STOP.

5. CARS AND PARKING: Parking is provided for students.  Your enrollment in school is your permit to use the parking lot.  All cars must be licensed and the driver must have a valid California driver’s license.  Students are not to loiter in cars or in the parking lot.  (PARKING AREA IS OUT OF BOUNDS DURING CLASS AND BREAK TIME).

6. CLOSED CAMPUS: Students shall not leave the campus at any time when classes are in session without first obtaining permission from the principal or teacher in charge.  A student given permission to leave camps will always sign-out in the office.  Students are not to leave during lunch if they have afternoon classes.

7. COUNSELING SERVICES: Counseling for any need is handled by the school counselor, intervention counselor, outside counseling, and principal.  Other staff members can also be helpful sources of information and assistance.  Always feel free to ask for help.

8. CREDITS AND GRADING: Credit is earned after the completion of assigned products.  Grades are based on the teacher's class objectives.  No "F" grades are ever given for students work.  Any questions about credits or grades can be asked of the principle, school secretary, the counselor, or teachers.

9. TELEPHONE CALLS AND MESSAGES: Phone messages for students will be taken from parents/guardians only.  Students will be allowed to make phone calls during non-class time.  This means before, after school, and during break and lunch.  All calls are $.25

12. DRUGS AND ALCOHOL: THE USE OF DRUGS AND ALCOHOL IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN ON THIS CAMPS: Bragging about using, actual use, or possession of either drugs or alcohol can result in suspension or expulsion from school.  If you brag about drugs while at school, you can expect to be called into the principal's office for a conference.  At this time, your parents may be informed about your possible use of drugs or alcohol.  If you are at school under the influence or in possession of either, the Sheriff and or other law enforcement agencies will be called.

13. FOOD OR DRINKS IN THE CLASS: Whether or not you are allowed to eat or drink in the classroom is left up to the policy of each teacher.  As a rule, you are not allowed to bring food or drinks into a classroom.

14. FOG DELAY: On days of heavy fog, it is possible that school will be delayed for two hours.  Students should listen to their radios or phone the school to find out if school is delayed.  Only when Arvin High School is delayed, is Nueva also delayed.  It should be noted that all classrooms are open at 8:00 am, whether school is delayed or not.  No student is ever unwelcome.  School begins at 10:25.

15. Commencement: Commencement is held each year at Harvey Auditorium on the campus of Bakersfield H.S.  In addition, each year, a special lunch will be held for those seniors attending Commencement.  Any senior thinking about graduating should regularly check on their credits by having a Student Progress Report filled out by the teachers and have it reviewed by the counselor.

16. HONOR ROLL: Each quarter students whose grades, attendance, attitude, and leadership are deemed exceptional are placed on an honor roll.  Letters will be sent to inform parents.

17. HOMEWORK: The assigning of homework is by each teacher and only for extra credit points when requested by students.

18. ILLNESS WHILE AT SCHOOL: If you get sick while at school, we will contact your parents to be allowed to go home.

19. INDEPENDENT STUDY: Students through courses taken outside the regular classroom can earn Credits.  These courses are designed to allow a student to complete a course needed for graduation.  These courses require work to be done at home, but under the direction of a teacher.

20. LEAVING THE CLASSROOM: Students need the teacher's permission to leave the classroom and must carry a hall pass

21. BREAKFAST AND LUNCHES: A hot lunch and breakfast is available for students.  Under normal circumstances, the school will give each student a form to take home and have signed.  This form qualifies the students for a free, reduced, or full price meal.  Breakfast is served from 8:00 to 8:30 and lunch from 12:55 to 1:25.  Students eat at the outside patio on picnic tables, except on rainy days when they are allowed to eat in a classroom.  Each student is to clean up after eating.

22. PAPER AND PENCIL: Each student is expected to have paper and pencil each school day.  Paper and pencil can be purchased in the office.  Your school binder is to be picked up in first period and returned at the end of the day to the same class.  The binder is to be with students at all times.

23. PASSING PERIODS: Students are expected to go immediately to their next period class.  No student should have to be told to go to class.

24. PROGRESS REPORTS: Any student may request a progress report showing how well a student is doing in each class or parent.  Often the principal or counselor will send around a progress report and have a meeting with a student about credits, grades, or general attitude.  Teachers will send home progress reports on all students not doing well in their classes.

25. REQUESTING TO SEE THE PRINCIPAL or COUNSELOR: Any student who wants to talk to the principal or counselor during class should ask his/her teacher for permission.

26. REPORT CARDS: Report cards are issued at the end of each semester.

27. RETURN TO ARVIN HIGH OR OTHER HIGH SCHOOL: A student wanting to return must follow the KHSD return to home school policy.  The student must earn at least 30 credits, ATTEND SUMMER SCHOOL, have at least 85% attendance, no cuts, or referrals, and be on track to graduate.  Any request must be discussed at a parent conference, and be approved by the principal and the High School Dean of Students of the regular high school.

29.  SCHOOL COLORS:  The official school colors of Nueva High School are blue and gold.

30. SCHOOL EMBLEM: The official emblem of Nueva High School is a Knight of Honor.

31. SCHOOL MOTTO: The motto of Nueva High School is "PRIDE IN SUCCESS".  The motto speaks of the fact that as a student tries, as he/she overcomes failure, one gains pride in oneself.

32. SCHOOL PROBATION: In cases when a student's behavior has been continually poor, he/she may be issued a warning by the principal to improve or face removal from school.

33. SPECIAL EVENTS: Guest speakers, field trips, or athletic events may be planned during the school year.  On occasions, special parental permission forms will be sent home to allow students to participate.

34. STUDENT COMPLAINTS: If you have a disagreement with a teacher or fellow student, you should make a complaint to the principal.  Arguing with a teacher or fighting with another student will get you nothing but trouble.  Much can be solved in the quiet of the principal's office.  Students involved in fighting can be arrested and suspended for the remainder of the semester.

35. STUDENTS STORE: Snacks and drinks are sold during break and after lunch are served.

36. VARIABLE CREDIT: Students at Nueva earn variable credit based on productive performance.  At the quarter when a student has earned 5 units in a class, that student can enter another class in which he/she needs credit.  This flexibility allows students to individualize their educational progress to make up any deficits.  Nevertheless, it is important for the student and their parents to understand that a class has not been completed towards graduation unless 5 units have been earned in that class.  It is also important to understand that a student cannot earn full credit (5 units per class) unless he/she attends school on a regular basis.

37. VISITORS: Student visitors are not permitted at Nueva unless the principal gives permission.  Permission must be obtained before school begins.

38. WAYS TO EARN CREDIT: In addition to regular class attendance and high academic productivity, the diligent Nueva student can earn more credit towards graduation in several ways.

A.      Attending R.O.P. Classes allow a student to earn up to 15 units a semester while also learning occupational skills.

B.      Seniors who have a history of good attendance may be able to attend classes at Bakersfield Adult School while still taking classes at Nueva.

C.     Seniors can also take classes at Bakersfield College, which will earn credit towards high school graduation.

D.     Students who are deficient in credits for graduation must also enroll in Summer School classes at Nueva or the Arvin H.S. Migrant Program.  A very important part of the Nueva program is Community Service Program.  Students with good discipline and attendance record can apply to earn credit toward graduation by providing service in the community under the direction of the school counselor.

E.      Nueva has a very limited number of spaces in Independent Study and those are reserved for students with great need and temporary circumstances beyond the student's control that interferes with regular school attendance.

F.      Students who are interested in an independent study program as a chosen alternative could also inquire about Discovery School.

G.     Students may not self-refer to Community School, but may be assigned as a student to Community School when a student has committed a serious discipline offense.  Students are only referred to Community School as an alternative to more serious discipline action or expulsion.

If you are interested in earning credit through any of the above programs, contact your counselor.

39. WORK EXPERENCE: Credit can be earned for working.  A student interested in such credit should speak with the counselor.

40. WORK PERMITS:  Any person under 18 years of age must have work permit, unless working for a parent, in order to be legally employed.  Work permits are issued in the office.  Students must be in regular attendance in school to receive a permit.

41. WORK AND SCHOOL PROGRAMS: Nueva's program has two major goals: (1) For those students who wish to return to a traditional high school and who will graduate on time, the goal is to remediate academic deficiencies (behind in units) and improve attendance/behavior which will lead to graduation.  (2) Students choosing to remain at Nueva until graduation or transfer to adult school will find a complete academic program.  For both students paths the educational emphasis at Nueva is on developing those skills and attitudes necessary for success in the workplace.  The development of basic skills, practical applications, computer literacy, and responsible citizenship are the goals of all programs.  Lastly, Nueva offers a year-round school-to-work curriculum for income qualified students to work during the year in the WIE jobs program.

BEST Checklist.  The Nueva High School Best checklist is based on the federal SCANS employability preparedness program.  This program asks students to complete a variety of activities to show their understanding and mastery of concepts and information.  As each concept is completed, teachers will check off that students have met the standards.  When all standards have been completed, students will be issued Employability cards that signify that they are ready to enter the world of work.
