Course Description
In its Fifteenth year, the HIV/AIDS Education Program is a five-day abstinence based curriculum offered to freshman students in the Kern High School District which communicates the requirements of SB 71 (The California Comprehensive Sexual Health and HIV/AIDS Prevention Education Act), and recommendations of the Kern High School District AIDS Task Force.

Five days of instruction include pre-assessment, virus symptoms and progression, responsible decision making, refusal skills to high risk behaviors, failure and success rates of condoms, sensitivity and compassion in dealing with AIDS victims, post assessment, and program evaluation.

Four separate Parent Nights are schedule during the first week of school to introduce the HIV teachers to parents and interested adults. Adults in attendance will be able to preview the curriculum content, materials, video clips and teaching strategies used in the program.

An HIV Follow-Up Program was initiated in 2003 that targets the junior (11th grade) students with a one lesson review on the present state of the virus.  This program is taught during the spring semester only.
