September 15, 2009: Congratulations to Max Beal and Gage Marchini who have been selected to represent California at the National FFA convention in Indianapolis in October. They will be representing and doing business on behalf of California of over 63 thousand members. The FFA is a national organization with over 500 thousand members nationwide and the National convention will host 50,000 members from throughout the country. Well done Max and Gage. January through May 2009 **Congratulations to Jockey Club winners Matt Hammons and Daniel Russell! **Arena Bowl: Congratulations to Sean O’Leary, Patrick Su’a and Jordan Austin for being chosen for the High School Senior All Star Arena Football game last Friday. Latierra Rumph, Natalie Linares and Ariel Hurtado for taking 1st place in Spanish improvisational skits this weekend at CVFLA’s World Languages Fair this past weekend in Fresno. They scored the highest out of every group with a score of 26 out of 25. That’s right—they scored more than was possible. Also competing and winning 1st place in the French Language for improvisational skits were Janet Jungo, Maria Fonseca, & Patricia Gonzalez. Congrats to both groups for representing Highland so well & showing everyone that Scotsmen DO speak many languages! Our own Melvin Harris received a $2000 scholarship from Project Best recently at the awards ceremony held at BHS. He is pictured on the front page of the local section of the Bakersfield Californian - April 15th. **The Girl’s Soccer Award Winners: Varsity: MVP—Marina Arias; Most Inspirational—Jacqueline Dickson; Most Improved—Victoria Nakagawa. JV: MVP—Heidi Hay **Congratulations to March’s Jockey Club Winners: Carlos Rodriguez, Marina Arias and Shanice Herron. And to...over 160 individuals who competed at the Best Informed Greenhand FFA competition this weekend at UC Davis from all over the state. Kathleen Furtado placed 1st!! Meagan Dunlap placed 3rd, and Kayla Manning placed 13th. Remember, there were 160 people competing. Congratulations ladies. Highland also placed 1st as a team out of over 50 teams. Team members were Seth Carlson, Kayla Manning, Kathleen Furtado, Milan Guron, and Meagan Dunlap. What a FANTASTIC JOB to these folks for representing Highland High School so well. **Congratulations to the Highland Science Bowl Teams: The Red Team took 9th place and the Blue Team took 18th place, out of 32 teams. The Red team members were Dustin Rogers, Matt Rowland, Derrick Chan, Sofia Zahid and Adam Rivera. The Blue team members were Kenneth Martinez, Usman Zahid, Alexander Helland and Daniel Ward. Thanks also to Carol Humphrey for her help Friday and Saturday. Congratulations to the Academic Decathlon Team for placing in the top 10 at this year's competition. Max Beal won a Gold Medal in the Honor Essay category and Shawn Collins won a Bronze Medal for his Varsity Interview. The Highland Chess Club for placing 2nd overall in our league TEAM competition this year. On February 12, the top 16 individuals in the league competed for the top prize: LEAGUE CHAMPION. Throughout this season, 81 players competed against each other to reach the Sweet Sixteen. Saul Gonzalez finished a VERY RESPECTABLE 9th place. Other Highland players in the Sweet 16 include: Jujhar Singh, Jagrup Singh, Chad Kurczodyna and Anthony Morales. Congratulations to the Highland Chess Kings and to all the other players for a GREAT SEASON! To everyone who made SCOTS PREVIEW NIGHT on Jan. 21, the absolute best of them all! Our incoming students and their parents were welcomed in Highland style and were very impressed. Many parents commented about the experience and several asked about enrollment for students not previously planning to attend our campus. Lauren Roberts, Jansen Schmidt, Katie Foulger – 1st Place Team Highland FFA also came in 1st place for the 2008 Kern County Theme Award Well done to all the Highland Ag students who competed this year. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Start of School: Highland welcomes twenty or so staff members for the 2008-2009 School Year. During the week from August 11th to August 17th, Highland staff will be involved in multiple meeting and working hard at getting rooms ready for students on the First day of school - August 18th. Note the NEW TIME school will start - 8:25 AM. Professional Development for staff will continue to have a strong emphasis at Highland. Teachers will focus on improvement of student learning by developing a PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITY (with a professional learning center) and changing pedagogy (the way teachers teach) to make these improvements. Staff will also be developing and using better intervention strategies to improve student performance and learning. To achieve our vision of being a "School of Choice" staff at Highland must truly believe that every student can succeed by removing failure as an option. Highland is committed to improving school procedures and instructional practices. |
