What Kind of Question Is This?

 

Classroom/Library Activity:  Introduce students to the concept of Inch, Yard, and Mile Questions.  Then go through this list, having them vote on which kind of question each of the ones posted below is.  Do the questions fall into the category of Yes/No, Inch, Yard, or Mile?

 

  1. How many people die in the United States in automobile accidents caused by drunk drivers each year?

 

  1. What is the maximum legal blood alcohol level for drivers accepted by the state of California?

 

  1. Is alcohol advertising allowed on television?

 

  1. What is the legal drinking age in California?

 

  1. How can underage people get access to alcohol?

 

  1. Is there peer pressure on teens to drink alcohol?

 

  1. Which organizations work to educate the public about the dangers of drinking and driving?

 

  1. Which method works best to prevent drunk driving?

 

  1. How can teenagers be persuaded to abstain from drinking?

 

  1. Which method would work best for companies that sell alcohol to help prevent teen drinking?

 

 

Once you have reached the mile questions, you might brainstorm with the students, creating questions that could be pursued to answer the mile questions.  The mile questions would make good research starting points.
