Open Enrollment / Intra-District Transfer
All KHSD students must attend the high school
serving the student's regular area of attendance. (Click
here to see District boundary maps.) Any change to this policy
must be approved by district/site administrators. Changes to this
policy may be granted through either the Open Enrollment Program or the
Intra-District Transfer Policy.
Open Enrollment Program
Open Enrollment is a procedure to provide you and your student an
opportunity to apply for admission to Centennial High School (or any
other district school) outside of your attendance area.
Applications are available at all school sites and the District Office
beginning March 31, 2008 and must be received at the District Office by
3:00 p.m. on Friday May 2, 2008.
Open enrollment deadlines for incoming 9th grade students have closed.
Students entering grades 10 - 12 may still submit applications.
All students, including Special Education students, are eligible to
apply for Open Enrollment (OE) transfers. Only regular
comprehensive high school are available for OE if space is available at
the site. If space is available, a random selection determines
which students are accepted to a particular school. Students who
apply but are not accepted are enrolled at the school serving their
regular attendance area. OE transfers affect athletic
eligibility for one year for the first
transfer, and indefinite athletic ineligibility for a second transfer.
Acceptance into another school site does not guarantee placement into a
certain program. Parents/guardians must provide transportation for
their students. Loss of transportation will NOT
be considered a reason to rescind the Open Enrollment transfer.
Once the transfer is approved, this transfer is binding and
cannot be changed. A desire to return to the old school
would require the student to participate in the Open Enrollment process
again. Younger brothers/sister are not automatically granted an OE
transfer. For further information, please contact the Kern High
School District offices at 827-3157.
Intra-District Transfer Policy
Certain conditions may arise, either temporarily or permanently, which
may prompt a need to change a student's school of attendance.
These situations should be discussed with the school-site administrator
in charge of Intra-District Transfers (IDTs). Please consider the
following regarding IDTs:
- IDTs are reviewed each
grading period for good citizenship, regular attendance and a
minimum of average grades. Transfers who are judged not
acceptable will be revoked.
- IDTs which would worsen overcrowded classes
will be denied.
- An IDT may not be granted to a student whose
attendance, conduct or academic achievement does not
satisfactorily meet the expectations of the requested school of
attendance.
- IDTs based on curriculum (including
academies) will carry a two-year period of athletic
ineligibility.
- When specific or unusual circumstances
necessitate a transfer, the District Director will determine the
school of attendance who makes the final decision regarding all
IDT requests.
- IDTs based on mutual agreement do not
allow for younger siblings to follow and attend the
same school and carry a one-year period of athletic
ineligibility.
For more information, please consult the
school-site administrator in charge of
Intra-District Transfers at your school of residence. At
Centennial High School, this is Mr. Fries.
