The Kern High School District's Facilities Planning Department is among the most productive such agencies in the state, having overseen since 1991 the construction of five new comprehensive campuses. Construction of a sixth new campus is scheduled to start soon.

The KHSD's Facilities Planning Dept. has also had responsibility for overseeing the modernization of several existing campuses in recent years including Bakersfield High, West High and Highland High. An Extensive modernization of Shafter High School is scheduled to begin soon.

The responsibilities of the Facilities Planning Dept. includes overseeing:

• Design consultants

• Special consultants

• Inspection Services

• Division of the State Architects Office - Compliance with all applicable codes and laws

• Americans with Disabilities Act compliance

• Construction contract compliance
