STEP/JTPA

Prerequisite: Meet income, academic guidelines. By referral of 8th grade teachers.
STEP is a fifteen-month program offered to income-eligible students who meet the academic and referral guidelines. Students attend Summer School before and after their freshman year for credit, and they work three hours a day in the communities of Arvin and Lamont at minimum wage. Academic support is given the freshman year in a one-period study skills class during their regular school schedule. (See: Carolyn Leary)

Summer School

Semester 1 or 2
Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12
Credit: 5 to 10 credits per class
Prerequisite: None
These classes are for those students who want to enrich their learning or who need credit or classes for graduation. Information may be obtained and enrollment forms may be obtained in the Counseling Office in early May. Students may earn from 5 to 10 credits.

Workforce 2000

Semester 1 or 2
Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12
Credit: 5 credits per class
Prerequisite: Dropout: not enrolled in regular school.
This program has been designed to serve high school students who have dropped out of school. Any 14-19 year old student who is not attending school may apply to enroll in the Workforce 2000 Program. Three 13 week sessions give Workforce 2000 students the opportunity to earn 60 semester credits per year plus an additional 10 credits during a summer session. Classes are offered during the evening Monday through Thursday for 2 1/2 hours per night. (See: Asst. Principal of Instruction)

Bakersfield Adult School

Semester 1 or 2
Grades:
Credit: 5 to 10 per semester
Prerequisite: Counselor approval, signed contract, $10 fee refundable upon completion of class
Only 10 seniors may enroll per semester and can attend BAS at either the Mt. Vernon or Nueva campus sites. Courses available include: social studies, English, math, science. Students can earn up to 10 credits per semester by attending 1 or 2 nights per week for 9 or 18 weeks, depending upon campus site. Senior must be a potential graduate in order to earn one of the 10 placements. (See: Asst. Principal of Curriculum)

Nueva High School

Semester 1 or 2
Grades: 10, 11, 12
Credit: Variable
Prerequisite: Recommendation of counselor, Dean of Students, or parent request.
Nueva High School is an off-campus continuation school program. Students may be transferred to Nueva as a result of referral for disciplinary reasons or as a voluntary transfer. Students may earn credits necessary to graduate from Nueva. Upon recommendation by Principal and approval by Dean of Students, student may re enroll in Arvin's regular program at semester.
