Government emphasizes the foundation of American Government utilizing the supplemental text We The People, developed especially for the Bicentennial celebration of the Constitution. This class also involves the study of political life, state and local government, and the various branches of government in conjunction with a view of international politics.

Government 12 Honors

Semester 1 and 2
Grade 12
Credit: 5 per semester, One semester course
Prerequisites: Application, parent permission, submission of writing samples or other school work for evaluation, teacher recommendations. Overall G.P.A. of 3.00 or higher.
This course introduces students to the study of the constitutional government of the United States using the text We The People...The Citizen and the Constitution. It provides students with an understanding of how the Constitution came into existence, why it took the forrn it did, and how it has functioned for the past 200 years. It is a civic education equipping students to be active participants in America's present and future. As an integral part of the course,the entire class competes as a team in the Congressional Hearings held at CSU Bakersfield. Every student participates in one of the six cooperative teams testifying before a panel of judges. The winning school has the opportunity to go on to compete at the state level in Sacramento. Government 12 Honors and English 12 Honors collaborates on the Congressional Hearings competition.

Government 12 and 12 ESL

Credit: 5 per semester, One semester course
Prerequisites: None for 12; Qualify for the ESL program for 12 ESL
The Government 12 course is designed to inform students of the basic principles of America government including limited government, constitutional supremacy, popular sovereignty, rule of law, separation of powers, federalism, and protection of rights.

The Government 12 ESL course covers the same material but is designed to meet the needs of students who speak a language other than English. Oral and written participation in the students primary language is allowed so as to give higher level content to material.
