Dear Parents and Guardians:
We enjoyed a very smooth start to the 2006-07 school year. The following is information regarding Arvin High School that I would like to make you aware of:
· BLOCK SCHEDULE - We began the school year with the new block schedule. Although it was an adjustment for everyone concerned, both students and staff seem to have adjusted well to the change. To better evaluate the effectiveness of the block schedule, every quarter we will be conducting a random survey with students, parents and staff. We will also be reviewing grades and student performance on standardized tests – like the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) and the California Standards Tests – to see if the schedule has any noticeable effect on student achievement. The results of the surveys will be shared with you at the end of the school year.
· CAHSEE RESULTS - I am pleased to share with you that the results of the CAHSEE for last year’s sophomores (currently juniors) showed a marked improvement over the results of the sophomores from the previous year. The CAHSEE tests students in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math. In English Language Arts, 59% of the students passed the test and in Math, 66% passed the test. (The students not passing the CAHSEE will be able to take it four more times if necessary). The following graph shows the consistent progress that our students are making in passing the test on their first attempt.
· SCHOOL BOUNDARY CHANGES – With the construction of two new schools in the Kern High School District – Independence High School and Mira Monte High School – and the continued growth in our schools, new boundaries are being considered by a committee of parents, community members and district staff. (Opening in August 2008, Independence High School will be located at Old River and McCutchen Roads and Mira Monte High School will be at Fairfax and Redbank Roads). The boundary changes will affect most schools in the Kern High School District, including Arvin High School. Students who will be freshmen or sophomores during the 2008-09 school year may be affected by these boundary changes. The Boundary Committee will present proposals for changes during a public hearing on November 14, 2006 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at Golden Valley High School. If you have students that may be affected, I encourage you to attend this hearing. Spanish translation will be available.

Disfrutamos un empiezo sin complicaciones para el año escolar del 2006-2007. Lo que sigue es información sobre Arvin High School que me gustaría darles a conocer.
· HORARIO “BLOQUE”- BLOCK SCHEDULE – Empezamos el año escolar con el nuevo horario “Bloque”. Aunque tuvimos que ajustarnos, se parece que los estudiantes y el profesorado se han acomodado bien al cambio. Para mejor evaluar la eficacia del horario bloque, vamos a conducir una encuesta con los estudiantes, padres, y profesorado. También revisaremos grados y rendimiento de estudiantes en los exámenes estandarizados como el CAHSEE, y los exámenes estatales de California para ver si hay efectos notables en el éxito de estudiantes. Los resultados de las encuestas serán compartidas con ustedes al final del año escolar.
· RESULTADOS DE CAHSEE – Me complace de comunicarles los resultados del CAHSEE para los estudiantes del décimo grado del año pasado, que ahorra están el 11º grado. Ellos demostraron un gran progreso en comparación con los resultados de los estudiantes del mismo grado el año pasado. El CAHSEE prueba destrezas de ingles y de matemática. En la prueba de inglés, 59% de los estudiantes pasaron el exámen y en matemática, 66% pasaron el exámen. (Los estudiantes que no pasaron tienen la oportunidad de tomar el exámen cuatro veces mas si es necesario) La gráfica siguiente enseña el progreso consecuente de nuestros estudiantes en el esfuerzo de pasar el exámen la primera vez que lo toman.
· CAMBIOS DE LIMITES GEOGRAFICAS- de Escuela; Con la construcción de dos nuevas escuelas el distrito de Kern High School - Independence High School y Mira Monte High School- y el crecimiento de nuestras escuelas, nuevos límites se están considerando en un comité de padres, miembros de la comunidad, y del distrito. Independence High School abrirá sus puertas en agosto del 2008, se localizara en la esquina de las calles Old River y McCutchen y Mira Monta se localizara en la esquina de las calles Fairfax y Redbank. Los cambios de límites afectarán la mayoría de las escuelas del distrito de Kern High School, incluyendo Arvin High School. Los estudiantes que serán del 9º y 10º grado podrán ser afectados con estos cambios de límites. El comité sobre los límites presentarán propuestas para cambios durante una oportunidad de hablar de público el 14 de noviembre a las 7 de la noche en Golden Valley High School.
