Congratulations Centennial High School for taking home the regional championship title in the “We the People” Congressional Hearings competition held at Golden Valley High School on December 7. Centennial and Arvin high school, which took first place in the 21st District, will move on to represent Kern County in the state championships held in Sacramento in February.
Ten high school teams went head-to-head in the annual competition put on by Kern County Superintendent of Schools. Students tested their knowledge of the U.S. Government for a chance to win either the 21st or 23rd Congressional District title. Arvin, Golden Valley, Mira Monte, and Shafter high schools represented the 21st Congressional District. Centennial, East, West, South, Ridgeview, and Liberty high schools made up the 23rd Congressional District.
Each team presented testimony in two rounds of six mock congressional hearings to a panel of education and community leaders acting as a congressional committee. Students then had to answer questions involving constitutional principles.
