School Description and Mission Statement

Central Valley High School is one of five continuation schools in the Kern High School District. Central Valley High School serves students from the predominantly Hispanic communities of Shafter, Buttonwillow, Bellridge and surrounding rural areas. The school was established in September 1971 and is rich with history and traditions.

The faculty and staff of Central Valley Continuation High School are committed to preparing students for the future within a safe and accepting learning environment.  Students experience quality instruction through the implementation of a standards based curriculum that incorporates state mandated literacy, mathematic and technological skills.  The collective responsibility of Central Valley High School is to assist students in becoming personally and socially responsible citizens, and to develop life-long learners who realize their post-secondary academic and vocational goals. It is our belief that every student has the capacity to learn and deserves the opportunity to do so.

II. School Safety and Climate for Learning

School Safety Plan

 Date of Last Review/Update

  10/20/05

 Date Last Discussed with Staff

10/26/05

The School Safety Plan is linked to Shafter High School’s plan since the school is located on Shafter High School premises. Both schools share a comprehensive plan outlining procedures for staff and students in lieu of fire, earthquake, campus emergency, & school evacuation.

A Shafter Emergency Response Team (S.H.E.R.T) including administrators, teachers, and classified staff is activated when an emergency occurs. Local agencies including Fire, Police, Sheriff, and Ambulance have access to campus maps, gas shut-off valves, emergency exits, fire alarms, and the S.H.E.R.T command system response plan.

Central Valley has created a school climate that is positive, friendly and supportive of students. The school is committed to supporting the discipline policy of the Kern High School District as well as the school’s policies. The Site Administrator is responsible for monitoring student attendance, maintaining campus security, conducting conflict mediation, providing for student safety, and enforcing discipline policy. In addition, the Site Administrator also contacts parents when students violate the education code.

One campus supervisor, the Site Administrator and a KHSD Police Office monitor the safety of the campus.

School Programs and Practices that Promote a Positive Learning Environment

The staff at Central Valley is dedicated to providing a challenging learning environment to all students. Our staff focuses on students developing the attitudes, skills and abilities necessary to be successful. Our educational goals are:

1.   Enhance the curriculum by challenging and motivating students with effective teaching strategies, and

2.   Develop study and critical thinking skills and technology in the classroom.

The small size of the CVHS staff lends itself to regular communication, both formally and informally, about curricular concerns, student progress and teaching strategies. Adjustments are being made to make standards-based instruction and ESLRs a driving force in the curriculum.

The curriculum is primarily individualized and competency based. Staff and student collaboration is a key aspect of the Central Valley program. Teachers are available to assist students before school, during breaks and throughout the afternoon for extra tutoring and guidance. Student progress is monitored closely to identify students needing extra support. On occasion, some students work at their own pace to complete courses in a time span that fits their own needs.

Suspensions and Expulsions
Data reported are the number of suspensions and expulsions (i.e., the total number of incidents that result in a suspension or expulsion). The rate of suspensions and expulsions is the total number of incidents divided by the school's total enrollment as reported by CBEDS for the given year. In unified school districts, a comparison between a particular type of school (elementary, middle, high) and the district average may be misleading. Schools have the option of comparing their data with the district-wide average for the same type of school.

School Facilities

Central Valley is a small continuation school with two classrooms, two restrooms and one administration office.

Heating and cooling units are serviced or upgraded on a needed basis and fire extinguishers and alarm boxes are serviced annually. The school randomly conducts fire and earthquake drills to monitor alarm functionality. A phone and intercom system is installed in each classroom to assist with emergency and communication needs.

All facilities are cleaned and maintained on a daily basis by a competent and efficient custodial staff. The campus is kept "graffiti free" as a result of a KHSD unit that services every campus of the High School District.

III. Academic Data

Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR)
Through the California Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program, students in grades 2-11 are tested annually in various subject areas. Currently, the STAR program includes California Standards Tests (CST) in English-language arts and mathematics in grades 2-11, science and history/social science in grades 9-11, and a norm-referenced test, which tests reading, language, and mathematics in grades 2-11, spelling in grades 2-8, and science in grades 9-11.

California Standards Tests (CST)
The California Standards Tests (CST) show how well students are doing in relation to the state content standards. Student scores are reported as performance levels. The five performance levels are Advanced (exceeds state standards), Proficient (meets state standards), Basic (approaching state standards), Below Basic (below state standards), and Far Below Basic (well below state standards). Students scoring at the Proficient or Advanced level meet state standards in that content area. Detailed information regarding results for each grade and proficiency level can be found at the California Department of Education Web site at http://star.cde.ca.gov or by speaking with the school principal. Note: To protect student privacy, scores are not shown when the number of students tested is 10 or less.

CST - All Students
Data reported are the percent of students achieving at the proficient or advanced level (meeting or exceeding the state standard) and percent not tested. For mathematics, science, and history/social science, data regarding the percent not tested, by grade level and subgroup, are available at http://star.cde.ca.gov/.
